Wallcoverings; The epidermis of our Homes

Even in the most modern settings wall molding has its place

If you follow us on instagram you may have heard that our boutique home goods store Leslie Tyler Home Store is soon to launch AND we have a very special project that will be making its debut in the coming weeks. Leslie Tyler Home Store has combined forces with the talented Kayla Phillips to create a line of wall coverings that scream vibrant, young and hip. While simultaneously staying true to the classic prints we have grown to love.

I am over the moon with excitement about our first product launch. Our prints will be available in a traditional wallpaper but also a wall cling material which can be removed and repositioned hello renters (or anyone looking for a quick way to change up your look), we see you! Design heavy weight Genevieve Gorder has raved that with this new approach to wall coverings, options are endless. I am secretly hoping that there noncommittal appeal will give our clients the confidence to try something they may have previous reservations about.

Along with looking for every possible surface to plaster our prints on, we are also in the midst of a few room redesigns on the home front. We have been painting, pasting, and stapling all types of wall treatments. Here are a few trends we are in love with.

Living Wall

This trend began as a true living wall think plants that need to stay alive but leave it to modern technology to explode this trend and make it available to the masses, it a variety of different settings. Amazon has a wide variety of panels that can be attached to walls, trellises, gates, you name it, you can do it. They come in all sorts of varying colors and mimic so many different foliage options. We got the boxwood panels and will be installing on a wall in our servants staircase. The best part about this trend is that there is no watering, need for sunlight or dirt and it brings SO MUCH LIFE IN! So in the middle of the polar vortex this winter I will get to walk through a English garden on the way to the coffee.

Molding

This is a tried and true but is making a come back in our new home builds. Wall moldings ADD SO MUCH CHARACTER! With a few pieces of inexpensive trim and an afternoon you can add the look and feel of luxury. I often have clients ask me, “What can I do to make my home look expensive?” And I tell them, “add molding” whether it wall molding, crown molding, or baseboards. The look of luxury is in the extra details in the build of the room. Think about that college apartment so many I’ve been in don’t even wire a light! Unless you were lucky, they probably didn’t have an ounce of molding and you felt that. It probably felt cold and institutionalized. Don’t make that mistake with your home. Even if your building a brand new home insist that your builder and budget include these little extras, you’ll be happy you did.

Lacquered Walls

This is a treatment I am still trying to get right in my own home. I usually lean to matte finishes due to the 1908 plaster not always being a perfect pallet. However, can we just take a moment to say WOW! Gloss is a perfect finish to reflect light and add an unexpected dimension to a space. And bonus, it is super easy to clean and scrub a one year old may make me partial to this selling point. Although, everything that I have read is adamant that this is a highly intensive, painstaking process I am not alone in saying that it is totally worth it.

Whether it is one of our favorite trends or one we may not have hit on, put a little extra into your walls. They are like the skin of our homes, the largest canvas we have. Don’t limit their use to simply hanging art on them. Let them become the art themselves.

What wall treatment are you going to try?
